I know this is an odd question, but in the scheme of things, it’s relevant.
I’m writing this a short time before the U.S. Elections as two opposing political parties are forcing the other party’s voters to swallow a different diet. Questions swirl: Can a meat eater survive as a vegetarian, and can a vegetarian survive as a meat eater? From what I’ve read and seen televised, the answer is no. In more plain talk, the divide is too large, and cracks are deeper and wider than the San Andreas Fault. And thinking further, should and when an earthquake come, the land masses will forever change. This election, in my opinion, is like an earthquake.
Vegetarians and meat lovers have meals without consideration. Produce is laden with toxic fertilizers and animals are fed on hormone-induced feed. We, as intelligent beings, must think about what we’re digesting, or face the results of poisons.
What I fear… if America is all vegetarian with no meat eaters or visa-versa after this upcoming election, how balanced will the diet be? Can millions survive, or is there a better dose of staples?
As odd as this analogy is, the old way of living as a divided America doesn’t work.
As I walk about my foreign home, rigid energy starts with two words: WHAT IF. I’m unable to enjoy the usual nuances I’ve found joy in. What if America’s lifeboats sink?
What would happen to millions of people forced to decide what they can live with, should neither party’s diet work? What would a different meal taste like? Would it be in Denmark, Japan, Germany, New Zealand, Switzerland, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Iceland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and points in between, like South America or Africa?
The world’s table is big. Just know that whether you’re a writer, teacher, IT Specialist, or retired (or somewhere in between), the diet you embrace isn’t that unfamiliar as being served in America.
Can The United States survive on one diet over another? I don’t think so. Can it work together? What choice is there when the earthquake comes?
Well asked Cheryl. Thank you for writing this.
Words won’t solve EVERTHING, ACTIONS WILL.
Cheryl,
A beautiful metaphor. As a non-aligned voter (my non-compliant nature extends to my politics!) I always find the choice for President a difficult one because neither candidate lines up neatly with my concerns and opinions. While personality and behavior is a factor (both in the plus and the minus), it is not enough for voting. I typically vote for a third party so I am accustomed to “losing”. But what if the whole country loses as a result of the election? To some extent we are cushioned from the impact as we pursue life abroad, but the U.S. is still our native land and what happens there does not stay there — for us or for the rest of the world. We can only wait and see what the coming months and years bring.
Steve, as I read your comment, I’m taken by your last sentence: We can only wait and see what the coming months and years bring. This is profound, because true, there is no perfect candidate (as there is no perfect place to live). One idea of government is viewed more extreme than the other, depending where you sit at the table. I can say since the US ELECTION, the extremist views and stance have won. And from where I sit and observe, there are long exhausted breathing filling the air. The world is unfairly pitted into a certainty full of fear, anger, and division.
